Today's tip is about the creating a neater look with your hijab. What some sisters do is fold their square hijab so that it forms a triangle, and iron the material where it folds. That way, when they wear it, it is crisp and conservative at the fold. Personally I have never done that, in fear I may burn a hole in my hijab. Once it comes to ironing in general, I'm domestically challenged!..hehee
I'm going to describe another way you can wrap your hijab so that it creates a neater look in the end. This is different than just placing the hijab over your head and pinning it under your chin. The method that I am about to describe is more complex...but it helped me to get better at wrapping my hijab when I first started out. Infact, when I taught my friend Rania this method, it helped her to wrap her hijab neater too.
Here are the steps:
1. Fold your hijab in a triangle, or an uneven triangle (I prefer this because it gives you more material to wrap and cover with. Even if my hijab is 42"...I still do this...call it a habit I guess;))
2. Place the hijab on your head, at 30% of the hijabs width. You can reference a "stick man" picture of this on our first learn to wear hijab page.
3. Now remember Firown(Faroh) that prophet Musa(Moses) alaihi salam, was fighting against? Do you recall how the Egyptions wore head dresses that went flat across their forehead and then behind their ears? Well this is the technique I would like you to use for this step. Press the hijab against your forehead, with your right hand on the right side of your hijab and the left hand on the left side of the hijab and bring the material behind both of your ears, at the same time...and then forward to under your chin, and pin the hijab under there using a good quality oval pin.
4. After you've pinned the hijab under your chin, it should resemble the look of the headresses in Egyption Orient Times.
5. And thats it! you're done! naaaaaaaaaaa Just kidding..follow me to the next step :)) hhehe
6. So now you have it pinned under your chin, and one hanging side of your hijab will be short, and one side will be long. Begin to wrap your hijab around, as you would normally. You can do this by taking the longer side of your hijab, around to under your chin, then up across the opposite ear, and pin the hijab to a holt, at the top back of your head or top far side or what ever is your preference.
7. With the shorter side, bring it across from one side, to the other side of your shoulder and you can pin it with an oval pin or a nice brooch. If you prefer to tuck it in, you may do so as well.
8. Now that you have pinned your hijab in place, you may keep your hijab like this, some people do but personally I prefer to continue to the following steps.
9. You can now still feel the hijab behind your ears where you wrapped it when you first began. Now gently and softly, loosening a tiny little bit of material at a time, release the hijab from behind each ear, one at a time. Tug gently on the material, and the less material that is loosened the better. Repeat this process with each ear.
10. So, now your hijab looks ruffled at the sides. To even out the ruffles, tug gently at the top edge of your hijab, that was pressed against your forhead. Tug the edge so that it forms a rounded , but pointed arch. You can see pictures of this on our "Lovely Hijabs" Section.
11. Now tinker with your hijab so that it looks neat all over and voila..there's your neater hijab!
P.S. Practice makes perfect!
