Once it comes to hijabs or shaylas, the size makes a difference as to how it will look on you. From personal experience, it is easier to deal with a larger hijab than it is a small one. For example, a 36" inch square hijab versus a 42" square hijab. You will notice that the majority of square hijabs we offer at The Canadian Muslim are 42" inches square. As for the shayla, surprisingly, it is the other way around. It is easier to wrap a shorter shayla than it is a longer one. From personal experience, a comfortable length is 69" inches x 19' inches, which is the majority length we offer at our store as well. If your shayla is sheer, wear an opaque underscarf, and wrap it twice around so that it goes under your chin a second round. If you're not into wrapping and prefer a hijab that requires no pinning, then we can recommend the amira hijabs we offer.
So for easier hijabing, we recommend the average length along with lots of practice.
